Kirkland is a city found in the northwestern portion of Washington. It is found in King County about five miles to the northwest of East Seattle. The area in which Kirkland is located was first settled by Europeans in the 1860s. However, it was not until 1888 that the city was officially founded.
Throughout its history Kirkland grew in size several times by annexing nearby neighborhoods and towns including Totem Lake and Houghton. Nowadays, some of the biggest landmarks and points of interest in this Washington city are Heritage Hall at the corner of Market Street and Lake Avenue, the Peter Kirk building on Market Street, and Marina Park at 25 Lakeshore Plaza Drive.

Shopping and Dining

Kirkland Square Shopping Center is a popular shopping destination in the city. Some retail stores found in this area of the city include Eastside Trains, Review Miner, Mu.shoe, and Circa 15 Fabric Studio. Market on Central located near the intersection of 3rd Street and Central Way is a great place for picking up groceries and grabbing a quick meal.
Trellis Restaurant is a great Kirkland restaurant for those in the mood for creative fine dining. This restaurant is located on Kirkland Avenue in The Heathman Hotel. For a more casual meal, residents of Kirkland real estate can head to Nick's Grill on 124th Avenue for Tex-Mex sandwiches or Cafe Juanita at Northeast 120th Place for Italian cuisine.

Parks and Recreation

Marina Park is one of the largest and most popular green areas located in Kirkland. Among the amenities offered at this park are picnic tables, a boat launch area, an amphitheater, and fishing spots. Heritage Park on Waverly Way is another natural area found in Kirkland that offers a combination of recreation and serenity. Heritage Park offers more than 10 acres of landscaped garden areas. Also, the park features walking paths and beautiful views.
The City of Kirkland Department of Parks and Recreation runs numerous recreation and community centers throughout the city. These include the Peter Kirk Community Center on Kirkland Avenue and the North Kirkland Community Center on 103rd Avenue Northeast.


Kirkland offers an urban living environment and a fairly high cost of living in comparison to other American communities. With a median home value of $415,600 in 2013 in comparison to a median of only $250,800 in Washington overall, Kirkland is a city with relatively expensive real estate. Nevertheless, newcomers have been flocking to this Washington city since 2000, with the population growing by more than 90 percent.

School District

Public schools located in Kirkland are run by the Lake Washington School District, which is headquartered in nearby Redmond. This district serves not only Kirkland and Redmond, but also other nearby communities including Sammamish, Bothell, and Woodinville.
One notable characteristic of this Washington school district is its ambitions to carry out various education reform developments. For example, Lake Washington School District offers reform mathematics curriculum texts involved Connected Mathematics. The district also embraces Outcomes-based education.

Health and Transportation

The EvergreenHealth Medical Center is a prominent healthcare institution located near Kirkland real estate. This medical center is found on Northeast 128th Street. EvergreenHealth is a public medical center offering a wide range of health care services. Among the health care services provided at this Kirkland hospital are behavioral health care, breast health care, cancer care and treatment, drug addiction treatment, and community health services.
