Redmond , located about 16 miles east of Seattle, Washington, is home to around 54,000 residents. The city, which lies just north of Lake Sammamish, is best known as the corporate headquarters of Microsoft Corporation (and its MSNBC subsidiary), which employees more than 33,000 people at that location. Redmond has been nicknamed "The Bicycle Capital of the Northwest" for its annual cycling race through the streets of the city.

 

Shopping and Dining

 

Redmond real estate owners have a myriad of restaurants nearby from which to choose, everything from burgers to bistro food to fine French cuisine. Just a few of the favorite local restaurants include Blu Sardinia for Mediterranean cuisine, the Tipsy Cow Burger Bar for burgers and hand-cut fries, and Bai Tong for Thai food. Of course, there are scores of other eateries just a few miles away in Seattle.

You don't have to venture far from Redmond to find plenty of places to shop. Redmond Town Center, the local mall, is home to more than 110 retailers and restaurants. In addition, Redmond boasts an eclectic collection of independent retailers, including Petal and Twigs Florist, Redmond Cycle, Snapdoodle Toys and Hummingbird and Holly Gift Shop.

The city also hosts a farmers' and craft market, held each Saturday from May through October.

 

Parks and Recreation

 

One of the nicest things about owning Redmond real estate is the city's close proximity to a large number of parks, bodies of water and green spaces. The Redmond City Parks and Recreation Department owns and manages 23 city parks, more than 1,000 acres of green space, with facilities that include hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, ball parks, playgrounds and a velodrome. In addition, the parks department operates more than 17 miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails along the Sammamish River.

 

Living

 

Redmond real estate runs the gamut from apartment-style and semi-detached condos to traditional bungalows to new construction to luxury, multi-millon-dollar estates along the Sammamish River and in the surrounding hills. Architectural styles vary widely, from timber-style to ulltra-modern.

The median home sales price in Redmond for is $643,300, which represents a 10 percent increase from last year.

 

Schools, Health and Transportation

 

Children of Redmond real estate owners attend the public schools of the Lake Washington School District. This high-ranking district, the fifth largest in the State of Washington, has a current enrollment of around 26,000 students. The district owns and operates 53 schools, including 31 elementary schools, 12 junior high schools, four traditional high schools and six non-traditional high schools. Of particular note is STEM High School in Redmond, a magnet school that concentrates on science, technology, engineering and math. The district is known for its low teacher to student ratio. There are also several private and parochial schools in the area, including Brightmont Academy and the Bear Creek School. For higher education, nearby Seattle is home to Seattle University and the University of Washington.

Redmond real estate owners don't have to worry about access to quality health care. The region offers some of the best health care facilities in Washington state. Overlake Hospital Medical Center, a 349-bed acute care facility, is located just a few miles away in Bellevue. In addition, the nationally-ranked University of Washington Medical Center is located in Seattle.

It's easy to get around when you live in Redmond. The city's compact size means that your never far way from your destination. The city sits right on State Highway 202, which connects Redmond to Bethel to the north and Bellevue to the south. In addition, I-405, is just a few miles west of the city. Both King Country Metro and Sound Transit provide regular public bus service within Redmond and between Redmond and other points in King County.

For trips out of the region, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, located about 45 minutes from Redmond by car, offers more than 100 daily non-stop flights to dozens of cities in the United States, Canada and beyond. More than 42 million people fly in and out of the 2,000 acre facility each year.
